MELAKA, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- A man pleaded not guilty in the Ayer Keroh Sessions and Magistrates’ Courts today to four charges of injuring an elderly person and a child, attempting to steal a vehicle, and appearing naked in public last week.
Muhammad Firdaus Jamal, 37, pleaded before Judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah and Magistrate Nur Afiqah Radhiah Zainurin.
At the Sessions Court hearing, the shoe repairer was charged with intentionally causing serious injury to Nordin Sonsang, 63, by hitting him with a bottle containing a brown liquid at a house in Kampung Ayer Molek at 7.30 pm on Sept 29.
The charge, under Section 326 of the Penal Code, carries a prison sentence of up to 20 years, with the offender also liable to a fine or whipping upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Qayyum Ramlan asked the court to send the man, who was unrepresented by a lawyer, to Permai Hospital for a mental health assessment.
At the Magistrates’ Court, Muhammad Firdaus was charged with attempting to steal a Toyota Alphard at a house in Taman Ayer Molek at about 8 pm on the same date. The charge was framed under Section 379A of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum seven-year prison sentence and a fine upon conviction.
He was also charged under Section 323 of the same Code with injuring a two-year-eight-month-old girl at the same location at 8.20 pm, an offence punishable by up to one year in prison or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.
Muhammad Firdaus was also charged under Section 377D of the Penal Code with committing an act of gross indecency by being naked in public at a house in Taman Ayer Molek at 8.20 pm on the same date. The offence carries a maximum two-year prison sentence.
Prosecuting Officer Inspector Muhammad Nadzir Abdol Rahman conducted the prosecution.
The judge and magistrate ordered the man to be sent to Permai Hospital for a mental health assessment and set Nov 5 for mention of the case.
