GEORGE TOWN, Sept 18 (Bernama) -- Penang has begun ramping up preparations as the countdown hits one year to the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia.
State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said preparations involve various departments, agencies, and stakeholders to ensure Penang is ready in terms of security, health, accommodation, transport, venue management, and support for athletes and delegations.
He said the state government is committed to working closely with all parties to ensure thorough preparations for the biennial multi-sport event.
"Preparing for an international sporting event requires comprehensive planning and coordination.
"Therefore, every relevant department and agency will play their respective roles to ensure that every aspect of hosting is given due attention and carried out smoothly ahead of the Games," he said in a statement today.
Gooi said the state government wants the momentum of preparations to be further strengthened over the coming year so that Penang is not only ready from an organisational standpoint, but also capable of delivering the best experience and hospitality to athletes, officials, delegates, and visitors.
He called on Penangites to rally behind the national athletes, build excitement ahead of the Games, and welcome competitors, officials, and delegations from across Southeast Asia.
"We want the SEA Games spirit to be felt starting now. The flags, the cheers, and the spirit of the people of Penang must be part of the journey leading up to September 2027," he said.
The 2027 SEA Games will run from Sept 18 to 29, with Penang set to host six sports, namely sepak takraw, snooker and billiards, judo, boxing, table tennis, and floorball.
Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur will each host 18 sports, while Johor will host football.
