IPOH, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (MAPIM) will deploy a humanitarian mission to Nepal on Sept 5 to assist victims affected by massive flash floods in the country.
MAPIM president Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid said the organisation had contacted the Embassy of Nepal to obtain an initial overview of the situation.
"The initial phase of the mission will involve four MAPIM volunteers who will assess needs in the affected areas and coordinate the required aid.
"To maximise the impact of the assistance, MAPIM is also inviting participation from other local non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including a collaboration with humanitarian organisation MyCare, alongside two local NGOs in Nepal," he told a press conference on the Regional Mosques Conference 2026 here today.
On Aug 26, flash floods triggered by an avalanche struck Nepal, leaving at least 469 people dead and more than 1,400 missing, including nearly 540 foreigners.
The incident unleashed a rapid torrent of rocks, ice, mud and debris through Himalayan mountain rivers, sweeping through villages and key infrastructure along a popular trekking route connecting Kathmandu to Lhasa in Tibet.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that 57 Malaysians remained untraceable following the incident, based on reports received from family members, friends and employers as of 11 pm on Aug 27.
Commenting on urgent needs on the ground, Mohd Azmi said medical supplies were the top priority, followed by the distribution of basic food packs to victims.
He added that details regarding the special mission would be officially conveyed to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim soon.
"We hope this mission will convey and reflect the solidarity and wish of all Malaysians to come together and help ease the burden faced by the disaster victims there," he said.
