SHAH ALAM, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- The Selangor contingent surpassed their target of 80 gold medals at the Selangor 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) today, strengthening their position in the race for the overall title with one day of competition remaining.

The 80-gold target was achieved through the women’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) team, who defeated Penang 3-1 in today’s final to deliver the 80th gold medal to the host contingent.

Selangor’s gold medal tally continued to rise on the penultimate day of competition today, with the Red Giants contingent collecting 97 gold, 71 silver and 69 bronze medals, well ahead of nearest challengers the Federal Territories, who have 50 gold, 49 silver and 52 bronze medals.

Terengganu are in third place with 41 gold, 44 silver and 35 bronze medals.

Swimming was among Selangor’s biggest contributors, with the hosts emerging overall champions in the sport with 20 gold, seven silver and 11 bronze medals.

On the final day of swimming competition today, Selangor added three more gold medals, including through sensational home swimmer Eliza Ai Shen Tan, who completed her SUKMA debut with seven gold medals.

Eliza won the women’s 50-metre (m) freestyle in 26.44 seconds, erasing the Games record of 26.50s set by Leung Chii Lin in 2008.

The home swimmer had earlier won gold in the 200m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 4x100m freestyle, 4x200m freestyle, 4x100m mixed medley and 4x100m women’s medley, besides setting a national record in the 100m freestyle with a time of 56.78s.

In diving, 14-year-old Ayu Syuhaida Khairul pulled off a surprise by winning gold in the women’s individual 3m springboard with 237.20 points.

In another development, Pahang made amends for their disappointment at the 2024 edition in Sarawak by emerging champions in men’s hockey after defeating Penang 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the final at Pandamaran Hockey Stadium.

In track cycling, Johor rider Nur Alyssa Mohd Farid emerged champion in the women’s sprint after defeating Selangor representative Yong Ann Tung 2-0.

With 12 gold medals to be contested on the final day tomorrow, Selangor still have the opportunity to add to their medal haul before the Games draw to a close, further strengthening their bid to become overall champions on home soil.
