ALOR GAJAH, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- More than 12,000 students at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) are benefiting from upgraded digital infrastructure through the provision of 410 Wi-Fi access points (APs) and a new 4G communications tower at the university.
The Universal Service Provision (USP) project, implemented by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is expected to strengthen digital connectivity across the campus, particularly in supporting learning, teaching and training needs based on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
MCMC said of the 410 APs planned, 108 have been operational since June 2025 under Phase 2 of the Public Institution of Higher Learning Wi-Fi Project, while an additional 302 APs are being implemented under Phase 3 and are scheduled for completion on Sept 23.
“The new 4G communications tower is also being developed within the UTeM campus and is expected to be completed in November. It will help strengthen communications coverage while improving the quality and user experience of digital services among the campus community,” MCMC said in a statement today.
Earlier, MCMC Southern Region Senior Director Rizal Abd Malek, representing Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil, inspected the implementation of the project at UTeM, accompanied by UTeM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) Prof Dr Mohd Rizal Salleh and UTeM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Sabri Mohd Sharif.
MCMC said that as a technical university, stable, fast and high-capacity Internet access was essential to support the use of smart laboratories, cloud-based engineering software, digital simulations and various learning applications that form part of the modern TVET ecosystem.
“The upgrade will also create a more conducive learning environment, while enabling students and educators to utilise digital technology more effectively in the teaching and learning process,” it said.
The initiative is also part of the Communications Ministry's ongoing commitment through MCMC to strengthen digital connectivity at institutions of public learning in line with current educational needs and rapid technological development.
MCMC said improved digital connectivity at educational institutions would not only facilitate access to learning resources, but also help equip students with digital skills and experience relevant to industry requirements.
The digital infrastructure upgrade at UTeM is expected to further strengthen the country's TVET ecosystem, enhance graduates' readiness to adapt to technological changes, and support the development of the digital and technical talent needed to drive future economic growth.
