KALABAKAN, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- More than 148,300 participants have taken part in the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS) in Sabah since its launch in January 2025.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Corporate Communications, in a statement, said the KIS Community Carnival was part of ongoing efforts to educate the public on safe and responsible Internet use.
“Today, more than 500 residents from Kalabakan and surrounding areas participated in the KIS Community Carnival for Kalabakan district in conjunction with the National Month celebration, organised by MCMC at FELDA Umas here.
“The programme aims to enhance public understanding of safe Internet usage,” it said.
The statement said awareness on online scams was among the key focuses of the carnival, with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) sharing information on financial scam tactics, identity impersonation threats and self-protection measures.
It said the knowledge shared was important in helping the public identify risks early and prevent financial losses that could affect individuals and families.
Various government agencies and strategic partners, including the police (PDRM), Social Security Organisation (Perkeso), Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Lembaga Tabung Haji, also provided information.
The agencies involved also offered advice and services related to digital safety, financial protection, education and social well-being to the local community.
MCMC said the implementation of KIS in Kalabakan reflected its efforts to expand digital safety advocacy to grassroots communities, particularly in rural areas and locations outside major urban centres.
“In the digital economy era, internet safety is no longer merely a technological issue, but is directly linked to the ability of individuals to protect personal information, savings and family well-being from cyber threats,” it said.
The KIS Community Carnival, held in conjunction with the National Month celebration, promoted Internet safety through community activities with patriotic elements, including the Merdeka Fun Run, Citra Malaysia Attire Competition and Sukaneka Rakyat.
The carnival, officiated by Kalabakan MP Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy, helped bring digital safety advocacy closer to the local community through a more accessible and relatable approach.
