CAIRO, Aug 2 (dpa) -- A magnitude-5.1 earthquake struck Egypt early on Monday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences said.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially put the magnitude at 5.3 but later revised it to 5.0.

The quake struck at about 3 am (0000 GMT) at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres near the town of Fayed, situated on the Suez Canal, the USGS reported.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Strong earthquakes are relatively rare in North African countries.
