JAKARTA, Aug 3 (Bernama) -- Indonesia is optimistic about achieving US$20 billion in bilateral trade with Thailand by 2030 following the adoption of the Indonesia-Thailand Strategic Partnership Roadmap 2026-2030 on Monday.
President Prabowo Subianto said the roadmap, adopted during the second Leaders' Consultation with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul at the Merdeka Palace here, would serve as a shared framework to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
“We also agreed to expand investment, improve market access and strengthen partnerships between businesses, including by holding the first Joint Trade Commission (JTC) in our history as a mechanism to discuss business opportunities and address various trade barriers," he told a joint press conference, which was streamed live on YouTube.
Anutin arrived in Jakarta on Monday for his first official visit to Indonesia since taking office as Thailand's 32nd prime minister in September 2025. The visit also marked the first official visit by a Thai prime minister to Indonesia in 15 years.
Prabowo said the meeting was the second Leaders' Consultation since the two countries elevated their bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership during his visit to Bangkok last year.
Prabowo said that during the meeting, Indonesia and Thailand had also agreed to strengthen cooperation in food security, covering agricultural technology, logistics, food processing and supply chain resilience.
On energy, he said both countries supported convening the Indonesia-Thailand Energy Forum to strengthen energy security and accelerate the transition towards sustainable energy through collaboration between governments and businesses.
Prabowo said Indonesia and Thailand had also committed to strengthening cooperation in the digital economy, including promoting the use of local currency transactions to improve the efficiency of bilateral trade and investment.
He said both countries could also leverage their respective strengths in the halal industry to develop regional and global halal value chains.
He said the meeting also resulted in the signing of a memorandum of understanding on education to strengthen human capital development. He also welcomed agreements between the Tourism Authority of Thailand and TransNusa on tourism and connectivity, as well as between Bio-Axel and Pro Konsilium on an organic waste processing project.
Earlier, in his opening remarks before the bilateral meeting, Anutin said Indonesia was Thailand's fourth-largest trading partner within ASEAN, adding that both countries should do more to increase bilateral trade given the size of their economies.
He said Thailand was ready to host the inaugural Thailand-Indonesia JTC at the commerce minister level to facilitate greater trade and investment while setting a more ambitious bilateral trade target.
On food security, Anutin said Thailand was ready to remain a reliable supplier of high-quality rice to Indonesia, while seeking greater access for Thai agricultural products, meat, dairy products and agricultural machinery to the Indonesian market.
Anutin said Thailand also hoped to increase imports of Indonesian urea fertiliser from the current annual volume of about 60,000 tonnes to several hundred thousand tonnes.
He also called for closer cooperation in the halal industry, including renewing the mutual recognition agreement on halal certification before it expires in November.
