Stop Campaigning After 11.59pm Tonight, EC Reminds Parties

JOHOR BAHRU, July 10 (Bernama) -- The Election Commission (EC) has reminded all parties contesting in the 16th Johor State Election to cease all forms of campaigning after the official campaign period ends at 11.59 pm tonight.

EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said that once the campaign period ends, all parties must stop all campaign-related activities, including canvassing for votes outside polling centres and campaigning through social media platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, Threads and others.

"The EC also reminds all contesting parties and candidates that they are prohibited from opening, setting up or maintaining booths (barung) on polling day, as this constitutes an offence under the Election Offences Act 1954," he said in a statement here today.

Khairul Shahril also reminded voters that the use of mobile phones inside polling streams is not permitted, adding that notices and posters prohibiting the use of mobile phones will be displayed outside and inside polling stations.

"Voters who bring mobile phones to the polling station must place them in the designated area after receiving their ballot papers and collect them after completing the voting process," he said.

He advised voters not to wait until the last minute to cast their ballots and encouraged them to vote according to the recommended times stated on the MySPR Semak application.

"However, voters may cast their votes at their convenience between 8 am and 6 pm, or according to the gazetted operating hours of their respective polling centres," he said.

Voters are also reminded to bring their identity cards for verification purposes and are advised to check their voting information beforehand through the various platforms provided to help ensure a smooth voting process.

"Voters are reminded not to hand over their identity cards to anyone other than election officials," he said.

Meanwhile, employers are reminded to provide a reasonable period for employees who are eligible registered voters to cast their ballots in the Johor State Election tomorrow, as provided for under the Election Offences Act 1954.

Khairul Shahril said the EC conducted checks on polling equipment, including ballot boxes, indelible ink, ballot papers and voting booths, on Thursday and Friday before their distribution to Presiding Officers (KTM) at each polling stream to ensure a smooth voting process tomorrow.

He said the checks were carried out to ensure that all polling equipment and supplies were complete and in good condition.
