JPJ To Book Motorcyclists Riding Without Helmets During Johor Polls Campaign - Loke

PUTRAJAYA, July 10 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has instructed the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to issue summonses to individuals found riding motorcycles without helmets during the Johor state election campaign, based on evidence from viral videos.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the action would be enforced regardless of political affiliation, including against Pakatan Harapan (PH) campaign workers.

"My position has always been clear and consistent. When I raised the same issue involving Barisan Nasional leaders during the Slim by-election campaign nearly six years ago, I stressed that there is nothing wrong with riding motorcycles while campaigning, but every rider must wear a helmet and set a good example for the public.

"This principle applies to everyone without exception, including PH candidates and campaign workers. Road safety laws do not recognise political parties," he said in a statement today.

Loke said the MOT viewed seriously the viral issue involving a group of PH campaign workers, including those from the DAP, who were seen riding motorcycles without helmets during the Johor state election campaign.

"The law must be enforced fairly and equally on all Malaysians.

"I will not compromise on this principle even if it involves my own campaign colleagues," said Loke, who is DAP secretary-general.
