PUTRAJAYA, Oct 15 (Bernama) -- The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), is strengthening flood protection and estuary conservation in Terengganu through two projects worth a total of RM145.46 million handed over to the state government.
In a statement today, PETRA said both projects, implemented by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), aimed to mitigate flood risks and coastal erosion, while protecting local communities.
DID director-general Datuk Mohamad Radzi Abdul Talib handed over the projects to Terengganu Deputy State Secretary (Development) Datuk Azran Amin Mazlan, PETRA said.
“The handover was witnessed by PETRA Secretary-General Datuk Seri Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli and Terengganu State Secretary Datuk Mohd Azmi Mohamad Daham,” the statement said.
PETRA said the North Kuala Terengganu Flood Mitigation Plan, worth RM7.93 million, would enhance the capacity of the existing drainage system and reduce the flood-prone area by about 200 hectares, from 700 to 500 hectares.
The ministry said the project would also provide flood protection for about 3,000 residents in Gong Badak, Kuala Nerus.
The other project, the RM137.53 million Sungai Setiu Estuary Conservation Project in Setiu, was completed on Sept 1, 50 days ahead of its original contractual completion date of Oct 21, PETRA said.
“The project enhances estuary stability and navigational safety while reducing the risk of erosion and flooding in surrounding areas. It also supports local fishing and tourism activities,” the statement added.
PETRA said both projects would strengthen protection for local communities and infrastructure against flood and erosion risks, while supporting socioeconomic activities in the affected areas.
The statement added that the federal government, through PETRA, would continue to prioritise flood mitigation projects, river and estuary conservation, and the protection of vulnerable areas to strengthen community resilience and support sustainable socioeconomic development.
