KUCHING, Oct 15 (Bernama) -- The Communications Ministry, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the Sarawak state government, through its Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG) and Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT), have signed an MoU to implement the Kuching Smart City and Digital Connectivity project.
MCMC said in a statement today that the project aims to expand digital connectivity and support the transformation of urban services in the Greater Kuching area.
MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and MPHLG Permanent Secretary Datu Elizabeth Loh exchanged the MoU documents at a ceremony witnessed by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil here today.
The project will first be implemented in Greater Kuching, including areas under Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), and Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).
The areas of cooperation include developing AI- and data-driven smart city services, an integrated city platform, and a stronger connectivity backbone infrastructure to support more efficient, secure, and responsive urban service delivery.
The initiative is also expected to improve traffic and public facility management, speed up responses to incidents and emergencies, and provide a better digital experience for the public.
Speaking to reporters after the MoU document exchange ceremony, Fahmi said the initiative is an important project to strengthen Kuching's digital infrastructure.
“I believe this collaboration will significantly strengthen digital infrastructure in and around Kuching, with the project estimated to be worth RM550 million,” he said.
