MELAKA, Oct 15 (Bernama) -- The Defence Ministry today launched the ‘Harga Istimewa, Tentera Sejahtera’ (HITS) initiative, offering 308 essential household items at discounted prices.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the items, available at discounts of up to 30 per cent, could be purchased at 80 outlets operated by Perbadanan Perwira Niaga Malaysia (Pernama) nationwide, exclusively for military personnel and veterans.

“We have previously implemented numerous initiatives to improve their well-being in areas such as housing, welfare, healthcare, education, skills development and the economy. Today, we are completing these efforts by addressing the cost of buying daily household necessities.

“Pernama will play a major role in offering and providing goods at affordable prices, which will be even lower than those in the outside market,” he told reporters after launching HITS at the Pernama outlet in Terendak Camp here today.

Also present were Army Chief General Tan Sri Azhan Md Othman, Defence Ministry secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali and State Senior Executive Councillor for Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Datuk Rais Yasin.

Mohamed Khaled said Pernama should channel its profits back to military personnel by offering goods at lower prices at its outlets.

“With the substantial profits Pernama makes, we believe these can be returned to the personnel. It is like a cooperative that generates profits and eventually gives back to its members.

“However, for this to happen, military personnel must support Pernama. The higher its sales, the greater the benefits that can be returned to the personnel,” he said.
