JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- Police are investigating an incident in which several houses at a Myanmar refugee settlement in Kulai Besar, Kulai, were hit by Molotov cocktails early today.

Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the 1.30 am incident caused only a minor fire on the gates of the affected houses.

"No injuries or other damages were reported," he said in a statement.

He said that, based on investigations, police have not ruled out the possibility that individuals dissatisfied with two viral Facebook posts committed the act.

The videos showed a group of individuals, believed to be Myanmar refugees, challenging Malays to go to Kulai, besides claiming that Malays were cowards and afraid to enter the area, he said.

Ab Rahaman said police also received a report regarding the viral video posts.

A Myanmar refugee in his 30s lodged the report and denied involvement in the two viral videos, claiming others misused his photo to create them.

He said police have opened two investigation papers under Section 436, Section 505(b), and Section 505(c) of the Penal Code, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Ab Rahaman said police view the incident seriously and will take stern action against anyone found disrupting peace and harmony in the state.

He also urged the public with information about the incident to contact the nearest police station, call the Johor Police hotline at 019-2792095, or reach the Johor Contingent Police Headquarters Operations Room at 07-2212999.
