MEXICO CITY, Oct 9 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Nine inmates and a child visitor were killed on Thursday in a brawl at El Castillo prison in Mexico's northwestern state of Sinaloa, local authorities said, reported Xinhua.
Another 16 inmates were injured and taken for medical treatment, the state's Secretariat of Public Security said in a statement.
Personnel from several agencies intervened to restore order, and the prison is now under control, the secretariat said.
The state prosecutor's office has been informed of the incident and will investigate its circumstances and establish responsibility. Social workers are providing the families of the victims with updates.
