KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- The National Financial Literacy Symposium 2026 (NFLS 2026) is focusing on efforts to strengthen the financial well-being of the public through targeted financial education tailored to the needs of specific groups.
The two-day event, themed “No One Left Behind: Bridging Gaps, Securing Futures”, began today at Sasana Kijang and brings together policymakers, regulators, industry leaders, researchers and academicians to discuss financial challenges and strategies to strengthen financial resilience and inclusion.
Among the key issues highlighted are the financial realities of the sandwich generation, gig and platform workers navigating irregular income streams and families raising children with special needs.
The GoGiggers Financial Literacy Programme organised by the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) with Financial Education Network (FEN) partners including the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN), recorded a 34.4 per cent increase in financial well-being among participating gig workers in Peninsular Malaysia.
Additionally, 74 per cent of participants began building emergency savings, accumulating more than RM68,000 in savings and RM40,000 in investments during the programme.
Financial literacy remained a critical foundation for individuals to make informed financial decisions, navigate an increasingly complex financial environment and build long-term financial resilience, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Deputy Governor Adnan Zaylani Mohamad Zahid said at the launch of Financial Literacy Month 2026 (FLM 2026) and NFLS 2026 here today.
NFLS 2026 also features a plenary session titled “When Love Meets Limits: Financial Literacy for the Sandwich Generation in an Ageing Society”, moderated by BNM Assistant Governor Suhaimi Ali.
The session examines how financial literacy and inclusion can help the sandwich generation balance caregiving responsibilities, daily financial needs and long-term financial security in an ageing society.
The symposium also features paper presentation sessions covering financial literacy and behaviour, retirement preparedness, financial resilience, digital financial inclusion and financial well-being.
The presentations explore emerging challenges and opportunities facing Malaysians, including retirement savings adequacy, financial vulnerability, sustainable financial behaviour and participation in the digital financial ecosystem.
NFLS 2026 is co-organised by FEN members, namely BNM, EPF and AKPK, in collaboration with the Malaysian Economic Association (MEA).
This year’s event also coincides with FEN’s 10th anniversary, marking a decade of collaboration among regulators, government agencies and industry stakeholders in advancing financial literacy and well-being for Malaysians.
