KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Tamil feature film ‘Irumbuth Thottam – Ladang Besi’, directed by first-time filmmaker Jaydev Jayakumar, is set to debut in Australia this month, giving Malaysian Tamil cinema a new international platform.
Produced by AVLT Production and Jegen John Peter, the 114-minute crime-investigation drama will screen in Australian cinemas through the Melbourne Malaysian Indian Cultural Club (MMICC).
Set in Sri Tebong, Melaka, the film follows a police investigation into the murder of a 15-year-old schoolgirl, which gradually uncovers a series of family secrets and hidden evidence.
Written, directed and edited by Jaydev, the film was shot entirely in his hometown Tebong, Melaka, with more than 50 members of the local community involved as supporting actors and extras.
Jaydev said the production was particularly meaningful to him as it allowed him to tell a story rooted in his hometown while bringing together members of the local community in the filmmaking process.
“Having the opportunity to bring this movie to audiences in Australia is a meaningful milestone for everyone involved,” he said in a statement to Bernama.
He said the film also reflected the potential of Malaysian filmmakers to tell locally rooted stories for audiences beyond the country.
The film, which was released in Malaysia on Aug 6, features Irfan Zaini, Logavarman Stideran, Marie Dashani Matthews, Mohana Raj, Dhurgaashini S Vijyan and Vino Shan, among others.
