DUNGUN, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- A 25-year-old medical assistant died after reportedly drowning while swimming at Chemerong Waterfall here today.

Al Muktafi Billah Shah Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Senior Fire Officer I Kama Suhaimi Abdullah said that the victim, Mohd Ikmal Awid, who was stationed at the Kemaman Hospital, was found drowned at the scene at noon.

He said his team received a report of the incident at 11.46 am, but the firefighters who arrived at the scene found that the victim, who was from Kota Belud, Sabah, had already been found by his friends.

"The victim was said to be swimming with six of his friends when suddenly the victim and another friend were swept away by currents," he said in a statement today.

Suhaimi said the victim's friend was successfully rescued by their friends but the victim could not be saved during the incident.

"About 15 minutes later, his friends made another dive and the victim was found at noon," he said.

He added that the victim was pronounced dead by a medical officer from the Ministry of Health before being handed over to the police for further action.
