SARIKEI, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak state government will implement two road projects with a combined value of RM98 million to ease traffic congestion, as well as improving connectivity and economic activity in Sarikei.

Sarikei Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said the projects comprise the upgrading of Nyelong By-Pass to a four-lane, two-way road costing RM86 million, and the construction of a new Nyelong By-Pass/Kwong Ming Minah road costing RM12 million.

He said the 3.6-kilometre (km) upgrading project will widen the existing two-lane single carriageway to a four-lane dual carriageway.

The project is being implemented under the Sarawak Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD), with the Public Works Department (JKR) as the implementing agency.

“Implementation of the two projects is important to ease congestion, improve road user safety, facilitate traffic flow and shorten travel time,” he said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the two projects here today.

Huang, who is also the Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister said the two-kilometre Nyelong By-Pass/Kwong Ming Minah road would be implemented under the Rajang Delta Development Agency (RADDA).

He said the number of vehicles using Jalan Repok had been increasing, while Nyelong By-Pass had become an important alternative route for motorists entering and leaving Sarikei town.

The road also serves as a bypass towards Tanjung Manis, making increased road capacity essential to accommodate the rise in traffic.
