KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) today announced a 23-man Harimau Malaya squad for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 in Jakarta and Bandung, Indonesia from Sept 25 to Oct 5.
Interim head coach Tan Cheng Hoe retained five players from the previous ASEAN Cup squad, namely Azri Ghani, Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili, Sergio Aguero, G. Pavithran and Faris Danish Asrul.
Several key players have also been called up to strengthen the national squad for the tournament, with the players set to report for the centralised training camp beginning Monday.
“The Harimau Malaya squad will depart for Jakarta on Tuesday, Sept 22, 2026 to compete in Division 1 of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, with Group A comprising hosts Indonesia, Singapore, Bangladesh and Malaysia, while Group B features Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Pakistan,” FAM said in a statement today.
Malaysia, ranked 136th in the world, will open their campaign against 181st-ranked Bangladesh at Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta on Sept 25.
The national side will then face hosts Indonesia, ranked 118th in the world, at Gelora Bung Karno on Sept 28 before concluding their Group A campaign against Singapore at Stadium Si Jalak Harupat, Bandung on Oct 1.
Under the tournament format, the Group A and Group B winners will meet in the final at Gelora Bung Karno on the evening of Oct 5, while the two group runners-up will contest the third-place playoff at the same venue earlier that day.
