LUAS, MetMalaysia Sign MoU To Boost Selangor Water Resource Management

SHAH ALAM, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to share data supporting operational and water resources management in the state.

LUAS said in a statement today that the collaboration mainly involves feeding rainfall telemetry data from LUAS and MetMalaysia into the Integrated Water Resources Information Management System (IWRIMS) portal.

Additionally, weather forecast data from Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and radar data, including the Radar Integrated Nowcasting System (RaINS) and Malaysia Rainfall Estimation (MyRAE), will be integrated into the LUAS Intelligent Support System (LiSS).

“The implementation of this collaboration will enable rainfall, weather, and radar information from both agencies to be used in an integrated manner for monitoring and simulation modelling.

“The data covers records from telemetry stations in the Selangor, Langat, and Klang river basins, including LUAS rainfall telemetry stations and MetMalaysia meteorological stations,” said the statement.

LUAS said that coordinating information through IWRIMS and LiSS will enhance operational capabilities and support more accurate real-time decisions.

“Through the implementation of this MoU, LUAS can improve regulatory and management actions, including optimising the use of water resources from rivers and ponds.

“This effort also supports preserving the state's water quality and quantity at optimal levels while strengthening preparedness for the El Niño phenomenon,” said the statement.

It added that more comprehensive meteorological and hydrological information enables water resource monitoring, planning, and management to be efficient, responsive, and cohesive.

LUAS in an official Facebook post, shared that LUAS senior assistant director (River Basin and Coastal Management Division) Haslina Amer led the MoU exchange ceremony, while MetMalaysia was represented by its director-general, Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip.

It was witnessed by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Building here today.
