JERTIH, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- A married couple was killed after the motorcycle they were riding collided with an earth-laden lorry and three other motorcycles at Jalan Gong Kedak here this morning.

The victims, Mohd Zamri Mohd Zaki, 41, and his wife Norlyana Ismail, 45, from Batu Rakit, Kuala Nerus, were part of a motorcycle convoy and died at the scene in the 9.45 am incident.

Besut police chief Supt Mohd Rozaime Ab. Rahim said three other convoy participants riding two motorcycles were injured in the accident.

"Initial investigations found that the Nissan Tipper lorry, driven by a 57-year-old man, was travelling from Jertih towards Kuala Besut en route to Bachok, Kelantan.

"At the same time, three Aveta Nova 250 motorcycles ridden in a group were travelling in the opposite direction towards Kuala Perlis, Perlis from Kuala Terengganu," he said in a statement today.

Mohd Rozaime said upon arriving at the scene, a motorcycle ridden by a 51-year-old woman is believed to have entered the lorry's path before a collision occurred.

He said the impact caused the lorry to skid before crashing into the motorcycle ridden by Mohd Zamri and Norlyana.

"In the same incident, another motorcycle ridden by a 51-year-old man and his 50-year-old wife is believed to have crashed into the earth load that had spilled onto the road," he said.

He said all injured victims, including the lorry driver, were sent to Besut Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the two victims were sent to the hospital's Forensic Unit for post-mortem.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Members of the public with information are urged to contact Investigating Officer Inspector Mohd Zulkifli Razak at 019-4475767 or any nearest police station.
