PUTRAJAYA, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today hinted at “good news” following a special meeting to discuss concerns over recent increases in electricity bills affecting some households.
“TNB (Tenaga Nasional Bhd) has settled it and will issue a statement soon. (It’s) good news,” he told reporters after the meeting, which lasted about an hour at the Ministry of Finance here.
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, did not elaborate on the measures agreed to address the issue, saying TNB would issue an official statement.
The special meeting involved the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), Energy Commission (EC), TNB and the Ministry of Finance to examine immediate measures to mitigate the impact of higher electricity bills on affected households.
Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof was seen arriving at the meeting at 3.15 pm.
Fadillah, when approached by the media, also said a media statement would be issued.
Yesterday, Anwar said his attention remained focused on public concerns over higher electricity bills following his return from India and the Maldives.
He said about 80 per cent of domestic users consuming no more than 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) a month remained protected and were not affected by the rate increase following higher fuel costs this year.
However, he said haze and hotter weather in recent weeks had increased electricity consumption among some households, pushing their monthly usage above 600 kWh and subjecting them to the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA).
TNB said on Sept 15 that electricity consumers had received RM3.1 billion in AFA rebates since the mechanism was introduced on July 1, 2025, compared with RM800 million in surcharges during the same period.
