KANGAR, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- The Immigration Department foiled a migrant-smuggling attempt under Op Kutip after detaining a man suspected of acting as a transporter and an undocumented migrant in the Kuala Perlis area at about 3 am today.
Perlis Immigration director Mohammad A'sim Md Ali said the operation followed intelligence gathering and continuous monitoring by its Intelligence Division and Enforcement Division.
He said inspections and a raid at the location led to the detention of the 53-year-old man and a 35-year-old Myanmar national, who had no valid travel documents or pass to stay in Malaysia.
“Preliminary investigations found that the activity is believed to involve the use of secluded routes near the waters to move illegal immigrants,” he said in a statement tonight.
Mohammad A'sim said the local man is being investigated under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 [Act 670], while the Myanmar national is detained under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 [Act 155].
He said the Immigration Department also seized a sedan believed to have been used in the activity, a mobile phone, and several related documents during the operation.
