KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 (Bernama) -- Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim has described spending beyond approved allocations as inappropriate, warning that it could undermine the country's financial position.
“How can the money be enough when spending exceeds the allocations that have been set? We are living beyond our means. This is how a country is ruined,” said Muhammad Kamil, who is also political secretary to the Finance Minister, in a Facebook post tonight.
Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Johan Mahmood Merican said today that the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW) had, over the past several years, made commitments and spent more than the annual allocations approved for rural road projects.
In 2023, KKDW's actual expenditure amounted to RM1.8 billion compared with the approved allocation of RM1.1 billion, while in 2024, actual expenditure stood at RM2 billion against an approved allocation of RM1.3 billion.
Johan said the ministry's actual expenditure in 2025 was RM2.3 billion, compared with the approved allocation of RM1.6 billion.
For 2026, he said, the approved allocation was RM2.1 billion, while actual expenditure had reached RM1.9 billion as of last June.
To address the issue, Johan said the Finance Ministry (MoF) was working with KKDW, including by reprioritising the ministry's allocations.
