KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- UMNO has agreed to give its state leadership the mandate to hold discussions and negotiations with any political party interested in cooperating in the next election.

UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the decision was among the resolutions reached at the party's Supreme Council meeting held tonight.

"Any negotiations with any party to establish cooperation for the next election must be based on sincerity and trust, not by threatening," he told a press conference after the meeting at Menara Dato' Onn, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur here.

The meeting, which began at 8.45 pm, was chaired by UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and attended by deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Supreme Council members.

He said the meeting also agreed to extend an official invitation to PAS leaders to attend the 2026 UMNO General Assembly, scheduled to take place from Sept 9 to 12.

Asyraf Wajdi said three programmes are also scheduled for Sept 8 - the 2026 Malay Education Convention, the Malaysian Islamic Scholars Convention and Laman Wanita Kreatif.

Meanwhile, he said UMNO upholds the principle of the rule of law and stressed that no individual should be considered guilty until charged, tried and convicted by a court.

"UMNO stresses that the party has consistently maintained that it will not defend any wrongdoing, misconduct or deviation by any party, including its members and leaders, who must face justice through due legal process," he said.
