BEIJING, Aug 28 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Rescue operations near the Gyirong checkpoint in China's Tibet Region have been suspended due to the threat of a lake bursting, according to China Central Television on Friday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
A dam lake has formed at the confluence of two rivers near the Gyirong checkpoint and continues to expand, the report said.
Mudflow fragments are visible on both sides of the dam, and preliminary estimates indicate that the lake contains at least 2.5 million cubic metres (88.3 million cubic feet) of water.
There is a high risk of a dam lake bursting as a result of the mudflow, which could potentially lead to further catastrophic consequences downstream, the report read.
A powerful torrent of water rushed into the Bhotekoshi River in mountainous Nepal on Wednesday.
The flood was reportedly caused by a glacier collapse and debris flow.
The death toll from the devastating floods has risen to 475, with hundreds still missing as search teams look for survivors and recover bodies.
