KUCHING, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is determined to further strengthen its identity as the Soul of Borneo, with environmental sustainability, cultural heritage and the harmonious relationship between its people and nature serving as the state’s key strengths.

Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the close bond between people and nature was reflected not only in Sarawak’s culture and traditional dances, but also underpinned the state’s approach to economic development.

“Amid the challenges of climate change and rising global temperatures, we are focusing on clean energy and forest conservation to ensure that development progresses hand in hand with environmental sustainability.

“Our culture itself reflects the relationship between people and nature, living in harmony not only among the various communities but also with nature,” he said in his speech at the Soul of Borneo Gala Dinner held in conjunction with the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Travel Mart 2026 here tonight.

He said this approach was also reflected in the use of hydropower, solar energy and biomass, as well as the development of the hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) public transport system.

Abang Johari said Sarawak also wanted to showcase its natural beauty, culture and cuisine to more tourists through various UNESCO recognitions, including Gunung Mulu National Park, Niah National Park, Kuching as a Creative City of Gastronomy and Kuching Delta Geopark.
