MOSCOW, Aug 19 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Hungary's new President Andras Baka has taken office, Prime Minister Peter Magyar said on Wednesday, according to Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
The Hungarian Parliament elected former Supreme Court President Baka as the country's president at its August 11 session.
"As of today, Aug 19, 2026, Dr. Andras Baka is the President of Hungary. I wish Mr. President great success, good health, and as much humanism as possible in his work!" Magyar said on social media.
Baka served as president of the Supreme Court of Hungary from 2009 to 2011 and resigned due to the Supreme Court reform under the government of then-Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Prior to that, he worked at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. From 2012 to 2020, he was the chairman of the Hungarian Curia, which was created following the Supreme Court reform.
Hungary's opposition parties Fidesz and the Christian Democratic People's Party boycotted the presidential election in protest against the removal of the previous president, Tamas Szujok, through constitutional amendments.
