KOTA BHARU, Aug 19 (Bernama) --  The mother of a baby who tested positive for drugs is not a drug addict, as her urine test only detected benzodiazepine (Benzo), said Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat.

He said the woman told police that the Benzo detected in her urine was from medication she was taking for anxiety.

“We conducted a urine test on the woman. Benzo is similar to ketum, but she said she was taking it for anxiety.

“She said the presence of Benzo in her urine was due to the effects of the anxiety medication. However, the case involving the baby is still under investigation,” he said at a press conference at the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters here today.

Mohd Yusoff said the woman’s urine test was negative for methamphetamine and other drugs.

He said investigations were still underway into the baby’s test results, which showed the presence of two types of substances.

On Aug 12, a baby girl tested positive for amphetamine and benzodiazepines following a urine screening conducted at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital here.

Police subsequently arrested the baby’s 30-year-old mother to assist in investigations under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
