FRANKFURT, Aug 19 (Bernama-dpa) -- French football star Patrick Vieira is to take over as head coach of Senegal's men’s national team, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
The 50-year-old, who won both the World Cup and European Championship as a player with France, succeeds Pape Thiaw, who was dismissed after Senegal's early elimination in the round of 32 at the World Cup.
For Vieira, the appointment represents a return to his roots. The former midfielder, who played for clubs including Arsenal, Inter Milan and Manchester City during his career, was born in Dakar.
He moved to France at the age of eight and made 107 appearances for the French national team.
Most recently, Vieira worked as a coach in Italy at Genoa, where he was dismissed in November 2025 before the end of his contract.
Previously, he coached Racing Strasbourg (2023-24) and Crystal Palace (2021-23)
