KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Bhd (Allianz General) is urging individuals and businesses to step up electrical fire prevention measures to protect lives and property, as well as to ensure operational continuity.

In a statement today, Allianz General said the risks associated with electrical fires are becoming more prominent amid increased electricity consumption in homes and commercial buildings, as well as the growing electric vehicle (EV) market.

According to the insurer, electrical fires can start unnoticed but spread rapidly, with common causes including overloaded circuits, faulty or ageing wiring, irregular maintenance of electrical equipment, short circuits, and damaged or low-quality components.

“Poorly managed environments near electrical equipment are also among the causes of such fires. In Malaysia, electrical problems are the cause of approximately 60 per cent of home fires, according to the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM).

“Based on JBPM statistics, some of the main causes are unsafe wiring, unauthorised electrical modifications and overloaded electrical equipment,” it said.

Following the increased use of high-powered electrical equipment and EVs, Allianz General encourages the public to avoid using multiple devices on a single power source, conduct annual wiring inspections, and regularly clean electrical equipment and its surrounding areas.

“The public is also encouraged to use certified components. Advanced tools and technologies such as thermal imaging, arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCI) and smart smoke detectors can detect electrical fire risks earlier.

“Meanwhile, effective fire protection systems use clean agents such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and inert gas systems, which are non-conductive and ensure safety in occupied spaces,” it said.

Allianz General chief executive officer Sean Wang, in the same statement, said efforts to ensure electrical fire safety and proactively take preventive measures were vital in protecting lives and assets.

“At Allianz General, we are committed to empowering individuals and businesses with the knowledge and resources necessary to prevent electrical fires. Preparedness is key to preventing electrical fires.

“Regular inspections and maintenance, as well as adherence to safety standards, can significantly reduce the risk of electrical fires. By adopting these measures and utilising predictive equipment, we can create a safer environment for everyone,” he said.

Allianz General has also published an electrical fire safety guide, which can be accessed at https://www.allianz.com.my/library/risk-engineering-consulting/electrical-fire-safety-guide.html.
