KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Tencent Cloud has established its first cloud region in Malaysia, comprising up to three availability zones in Johor, as the company strengthens its cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure to support enterprises in the country.

Tencent Cloud International Asia Pacific (APAC) Bluefin managing director Jiannan Zhou said two availability zones are already operational, while the third is under development.

“The new cloud region in Malaysia will give enterprises in the country a secure, resilient foundation for AI workloads and digital services at scale,” he said during a media briefing held in conjunction with the Tencent Cloud C-Suite Dialogue Malaysia here today.

Zhou said Malaysia’s strong technology infrastructure, talent pool and energy supply were among the factors driving Tencent Cloud to view the country not only as an independent market but also as a regional hub for the technology company’s business.

He said Tencent Cloud considers Malaysia a regional hub covering the company’s business across Southeast Asia.

“That’s why we keep on investing in cloud and AI-relevant technology here in this country,” he said.

Zhou said Tencent Cloud had previously supported Malaysian customers through infrastructure for content delivery network (CDN), live streaming and video-on-demand (VOD) services before establishing the new cloud region.

He said the company was also expanding beyond gaming and social entertainment, where Tencent Cloud has traditionally been strong, into sectors including financial services, manufacturing, energy, utilities and banking.

He added Tencent Cloud would prioritise industries where there was a strong match between their requirements and its technical capabilities, drawing on its experience in markets including Thailand, Indonesia and China.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, Tencent Cloud said the new cloud region would form part of Tencent Cloud International’s global infrastructure network, which currently spans 66 availability zones across 23 regions.

“The investment will expand Tencent Cloud’s local infrastructure presence, providing enterprises in Malaysia with the secure, resilient foundation needed for AI-powered workflows, data-heavy applications, and the delivery of digital services at scale,” it said.

Tencent Cloud added that it also announced new collaborations with Boost and Genting Plantations Group to explore integrating AI agent solutions into their workflows and service offerings.
