SERDANG, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Sasha Alyssa Philip delivered Selangor’s first athletics gold medal at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Selangor 2026 after emerging champion in the women’s discus throw at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Sports Centre here today.
The 18-year-old athlete secured the host contingent’s first athletics gold with a personal best throw of 44.93 metres (m).
The event saw a close contest, with Perlis’ Farhana Izurein Faizalamizul finishing just 0.64m behind to take silver with a throw of 44.29m, while Sarawak’s Pauline Ului completed the podium after recording 43.24m for bronze.
“It was a tough competition as everyone gave their best, so I’m happy to come away with the win while competing with my fellow athletes.
“I was aiming for a personal best and I’m pleased to have achieved it. Hopefully, I can improve further and produce an even better throw in my next competition,” she told reporters after the competition.
The record for the event stands at 46.66m, set by Negeri Sembilan’s Yap Jeng Tzan at the 2008 edition in Terengganu.
Meanwhile, Kelantan’s Alia Batrisya Nasaruddin won the women’s long jump gold with a leap of 5.88m, ahead of Sarawak duo Maritza Ferrer Neil Armstrong (5.74m) and Joanna Sangster (5.50m).
In the men’s shot put, Sabah’s Earl Isaac Mitzler Fredolin took gold with a throw of 15.11m, followed by Sarawak’s Jorez Puang Yi Jun (14.94m) and Hii Seng Yan (13.94m).
Sabah also secured gold in the women’s pole vault through Samantha Mae Godfrey Binting, who cleared 3.45m. Selangor’s Syafiqah Mohd Azrul Ikram took silver with 3.40m, while Pahang’s Noor Shahreena Jamizan claimed bronze with 3.35m.
In the women’s 10,000m race walk, Federal Territories’ Kok Hui Ying won gold in 55 minutes 55.06 seconds, followed by Johor’s Yapp Chia Ling (56:20.42s) and Melaka’s Tan Li Ren (56:36.08s).
In the men’s 10,000m, Negeri Sembilan’s T. Jayvind clinched gold in 32:45.31s, followed by Kedah’s M. Devindra (32:55.19s), while Perak’s Muhammad Farooq Muhammad Zubair Kanan settled for bronze in 33:12.95s.
