MELAKA, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The PKR National Congress 2026 ended with the party reaffirming its commitment to political stability and the people’s prosperity, while ensuring its reform agenda remains central to its struggle.
PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his winding-up speech at the congress, said he would continue to defend cooperation under the Unity Government to ensure political stability and economic growth for the benefit of the people.
Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, said the decision was his stance, while the future of the cooperation would depend on the leadership of UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN).
The Prime Minister also reminded all parties against taking excessive steps that could undermine the stability of the Unity Government, which he said was formed based on political awareness and national interest rather than divisive politics.
The congress also highlighted PKR’s efforts to maintain its reform identity while being part of the government, ensuring that administrative stability and economic benefits continue to reach the people.
PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar said the reform agenda must continue despite the party now being in government.
She said reforms within the party, administration and government policies were necessary to ensure the principles behind PKR’s establishment remained a legacy for future generations.
She cited the repeal of the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU) 1971 as an example of reforms achieved after PKR became part of the government.
Anwar gave an assurance that the government would not replace AUKU with new laws that could restrict student movements and said he would raise the matter at the Cabinet level
He added that existing legal provisions, including criminal laws, were sufficient to address student misconduct, with students subject to the same laws as other citizens.
Meanwhile, the congress also saw PKR emphasising organisational preparedness and ensuring the party remains ready to face any political developments without waiting for the dissolution of Parliament or candidate announcements.
PKR Wanita chief Fadhlina Sidek said the party must remain strong regardless of changes in the political landscape, while calling for greater space for women in leadership and decision-making.
Fadhlina, who is also Education Minister, stressed the importance of openness among party and government leaders in accepting criticism and improving governance.
At the same time, Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) highlighted efforts to empower Bumiputera participation in strategic technology sectors, including artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and biotechnology.
AMK also raised issues affecting Generation Z and young workers, including recognition of the gig economy, stronger social protection, skills development pathways, mental health and social well-being.
Overall, the two-day PKR National Congress 2026 showed the party’s intention to uphold political stability as the foundation for the Unity Government while continuing to pursue reforms and policy improvements.
