IPOH, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- An enforcement officer has been remanded for three days from today over allegations of receiving about RM190,000 in bribes from a cooking oil packaging company to facilitate its application for a subsidised cooking oil quota.
A source said the bribes were also allegedly paid to prevent enforcement action from being taken against the company.
Ipoh Assistant Registrar Mohd Shazmeer Zamhari issued the remand order against the suspect, in his 40s, until Aug 16 after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) made the application at the Ipoh Magistrate's Court this morning.
The man was detained at about 5 pm yesterday after he went to the MACC Taiping office to give his statement.
“Initial investigations found that the suspect allegedly committed the offence between 2022 and 2026. He is believed to have received the bribes through 19 cheques deposited into his personal bank account,” the source said.
Meanwhile, Perak MACC director Azizul Ahmad Sarkawi, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
