MANILA, Aug 10 (dpa) -- At least eight people have died in floods and landslides in the Philippines after more than a week of heavy rainfall, the country's disaster management agency said on Monday.
Nine people were injured and one person remained missing as several tropical storms and the south-west monsoon continued to bring heavy rain across the South-East Asian country.
The deaths were recorded in the provinces of Benguet, Rizal and Batangas on the main island of Luzon.
Five people died in landslides or mudslides, while one was electrocuted, one drowned and another was struck by a falling tree.
More than 750,000 people have been affected by the severe weather nationwide, according to authorities, with more than 8,000 forced to seek shelter in evacuation centres.
Numerous roads and residential areas around the capital Manila were also flooded, with water reaching waist height in some parts.
Schools were closed in many places due to the flooding, while ferry services were also disrupted in affected regions.
The coastguard said operations had been suspended at 20 ports in the central and eastern Philippines.
The country's weather service forecast further heavy rainfall.
