SHAH ALAM, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- The Selangor government aims to build 200,000 affordable homes under its Rumah Selangorku Harapan and Rumah Selangorku Idaman policies through the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2).
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the initiative is intended to help more Selangor residents own a home.
"To date, 64,188 units have been completed, while another 69,014 are under construction, bringing the total to 133,202 units," he said when tabling the RS-2 at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.
He said the state government also plans to increase the number of rental units under the Smart Sewa Scheme to 3,000 by 2030 for those who are not yet eligible for housing loans.
Under the scheme, 30 per cent of tenants' monthly rental payments will be set aside by the Selangor Housing and Property Board (LPHS) and returned to them as a housing deposit when they are ready to purchase a home.
Amirudin said the state government would also develop the Selangor Dignified Living Index to establish a multidimensional benchmark that reflects the challenges of urban living.
He said the index, to be developed through the state's new statistical unit framework, would assess the effectiveness of household assistance and support programmes, with evaluations conducted every 12 and 24 months to monitor recipients' progress.
On public transport, Amirudin said the Selangor Mobility initiative would realign the implementation of the Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) service to improve connectivity to commercial areas.
He said the frequency of public transport services would also be increased to improve access to LRT and MRT stations, while the state would pursue its vision of creating walkable cities through the construction of covered walkways at every station.
The government will also require every Rumah Selangorku Harapan and Rumah Selangorku Idaman development to include a bus stop to improve residents' access to public transport.
"This planning and alignment must incorporate the use of technology to identify areas with the highest traffic volume, public gathering points and every housing estate in Selangor to assess the need for small bus stops in residential areas," he said.
