PUTRAJAYA, Aug 3 (Bernama) -- The leadership legacy of the late Datuk Mohd Sukari Ab Hamid in strengthening government communications will continue to serve as a guiding principle for officers of the Information Department (Japen), particularly in maintaining a balance between digital engagement and grassroots outreach programmes.
Japen director-general Erwin Khairul Ahmad said one of Mohd Sukari's greatest contributions to the department was his extensive expertise in planning and implementing effective on-the-ground programmes to engage with the public.
"Mohd Sukari led the department through various phases of the country's communication challenges, from traditional methods to the digital era, and from times of stability to the COVID-19 pandemic. His vast experience and every piece of guidance he shared with us must continue to serve as our source of strength and an example to emulate.
"He also knew how to structure programme elements so that government messages were not only delivered, but also well received by all segments of society, from grassroots communities to the corporate sector," he told Bernama when contacted today.
As such, Erwin said Mohd Sukari's contributions, dedication and legacy should not end with his death but instead be carried forward so that they continue to live on in every task undertaken by Japen personnel as the best tribute to his memory.
"If we continue to uphold and embody his spirit, dedication and work ethic, I am confident that all Japen personnel will be able to overcome whatever challenges arise in today's communications landscape, no matter how complex they may be," he said.
Erwin said that when Japen began its digital transformation, the late Mohd Sukari was always open to change and supportive of creative new ideas.
"However, what I admired most was his principle that no matter how far we advance in digital technology, we must never forget the human touch. He always ensured there was a strong balance between face-to-face engagement and digital communication strategies," he said.
Recalling his time working with Mohd Sukari, Erwin described him as a leader who remained calm under all circumstances, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"He was a leader with extraordinary composure, even under immense pressure. In every critical situation, I never saw him panic, let alone lose his temper. When a leader remains calm, the staff gain confidence and believe that every problem has a solution," he said.
He added that Mohd Sukari was also known for his humility, courtesy and willingness to give junior officers the opportunity to voice their views before making decisions.
Mohd Sukari, 65, passed away today and was laid to rest after the Asar prayers at the Raudhatul Sakinah Cemetery in Kampung Melayu, Kepong.
He was appointed director-general of the Information Department on Dec 7, 2020, and retired on March 20, 2024.
Earlier, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil also extended his condolences to Mohd Sukari's family, describing his passing as a great loss to the entire Communications Ministry, especially the Information Department.
