MOSCOW, Aug 3 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- A lack of food, drinking water, and beds at an overcrowded temporary accommodation centre in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has sparked clashes among migrants waiting to be admitted, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported from Ceuta.
"We don't even have anywhere to relieve ourselves. My friends and I have gone without food or drinking water for three days. This makes people nervous and causes conflict. It is not that hard to understand," a young man named Ali, who was standing near the centre, told RIA Novosti.
When people arrive to deliver aid, queues quickly form around them, as most migrants have virtually no supplies of their own.
Harsh living conditions are exacerbated by the lack of adequate sleep. Shaded areas where they can camp on the ground must be shared among several groups, migrants told RIA Novosti.
The long wait, hunger and uncertainty are fuelling frustration among those gathered. Disputes over food, water and rest areas have erupted, while police officers monitor the area around the centre and intervene to break up scuffles.
In late July, the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta, on the North African coast, experienced a massive influx of migrants from neighbouring Morocco. Spain deployed additional police, civil guard and troops to the area in an effort to deter illegal crossings.
Mayor-President Juan Jesus Vivas announced on July 31 that approximately 60,000 people had entered Ceuta over 24 hours. The city's population stands at around 85,000.
