KUALA LUMPUR, August 3 (Bernama) -- Young national women's sprinter Izzatul Musfirah Ahmad Kamal Azira is eyeing the opportunity to grab gold and break the women's 100-metre (m) record at the Selangor 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) edition, starting August 15-24.
The 18-year-old Terengganu athlete said her preparations are now going well with the Under-20 World Athletics Championships (B-20) in Oregon, United States scheduled from August 5-9, which will be used as a platform to gain valuable experience competing at a high level before competing at SUKMA 2026.
"God willing, I want gold and am confident with the training I have that I can break the record (SUKMA 2026)," she said when met recently.
The SUKMA women's 100m record is currently held by Nur Afrina Batrisyia Mohd Rizal who represents Selangor with a time of 11:64 seconds (s) set in the 2024 edition in Sarawak.
Regarding her participation in Oregon, Izzatul Musfirah is determined to give her best performance in addition to wanting to improve her personal best this season, which is 11.71s at the 2026 Malaysia Open, in June.
The SUKMA 2024 women's 100m silver medalist also hopes to give her best when competing against other world representatives in Oregon and finish the competition without any injuries.
Apart from Izzatul Musfirah, the national athletics camp will comprise men's 100m bronze medalists at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games Danish Iftikhar Muhammad Roslee and Muhammad Ariel Iskandar Rusli who will also compete in the blue ribbon event, as well as the appearance of Avinaash Nair Sathiaseelan (men's 400m hurdles).
