TAWAU, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- The International Tawau Cultural Festival (FKAT) is steadily elevating Tawau into a lively and prosperous cultural tourism destination, captivating visitors from both home and abroad.
Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said FKAT has a distinct character of its own and is a major platform to showcase the cultural treasures of the state’s multi-ethnic communities.
"Culture is not just a historical heritage, but also an asset that must be preserved for future generations. I am confident that this festival will bring a significant impact on Tawau’s tourism and economic sectors," he said during the opening ceremony of the 11th FKAT 2026 last night.
He said FKAT not only highlights the unique identity of Sabah’s communities but also stands as a symbol of unity among the state’s various ethnic groups.
"This uniqueness also attracts international participants from countries such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Cambodia and Indonesia to take part in the festival. Tawau, as a border town, is rich in cultural diplomacy networks and regional cooperation," he added.
Meanwhile, Hajiji said FKAT has also created spillover economic benefits for entrepreneurs, homestay operators, artists and small traders, providing them with valuable income opportunities.
He added that the state government continues to intensify high-impact initiatives, programmes and events to attract more tourists to Sabah, in line with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and Visit Sabah Year 2027.
"Various tourism promotions are being carried out, including community-based initiatives and the strengthening of campaigns that will draw international visitors," he said.
In addition, Hajiji said that the state government will always support and assist ethnic organisations in preserving and managing their respective customs, arts and cultural heritage.
