GLASGOW, July 31 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) today has been awarded the prestigious Trafalgar Trophy after the national men’s team emerged as the best-performing weightlifting team at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The award was presented during the Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation (CWF) meeting held, here.

The trophy was presented to MWF President Datuk Ayub Rahmat by International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) President Mohammed Jalood and CWF Acting President Tom Liaw, with Commonwealth Sport Malaysia Deputy President Datuk Dr Nur Azmi Ahmad present to witness the presentation.

Commonwealth Sport Malaysia President Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria congratulated the MWF, particularly Ayub on the historic achievement.

“On behalf of Commonwealth Sport Malaysia and the entire Commonwealth family, we express our appreciation to the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation and Ayub Rahmat for the outstanding contribution of the weightlifting team to the Malaysian contingent at the XXIII Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026.

“We are equally proud of this remarkable achievement as they have been awarded the Trafalgar Trophy for the first time in history,” he said in a Facebook post by the Olympic Council of Malaysia.

Mohamad Norza is also President of the Southeast Asian Games Federation and Vice-President of the Olympic Council of Asia for the Southeast Asia Zone.

Malaysia earned the honour after securing five gold medals through Mohamad Aniq Kasdan in the men’s 60-kilogramme (kg) category, Muhamad Aznil Bidin (65kg), Muhammad Erry Hidayat (79kg), Muhammad Hafizuddin Roslin (88kg) and Mohamad Syahmi Nor Ghazali (94kg).

Introduced at the 11th Commonwealth Games in Edmonton in 1978, the trophy was named after Trafalgar, in reference to the historic Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and was established as part of the Commonwealth weightlifting tradition.

The Trafalgar Trophy is awarded to the best-performing men’s weightlifting team at the Commonwealth Games.
