MOSCOW, July 26 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- United States (US) President Donald Trump urged Republican senators not to delay passage of the SAVE America Act, which aims to tighten voting rules as part of the White House's fight against election fraud, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
Earlier, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Trump's patience with Senate Majority Leader John Thune was running out.
The US president wants the maximum possible portion of the SAVE America Act passed by the August congressional recess.
“The all Republican Senators! Terminate the Filibuster, which the Dumocrats will do as soon as they get the chance, and Pass The SAVE America Act, and everything else, including the Budget, and upcoming Debt Ceiling. Do it now, before it is too late!!!” Trump said on the social media platform Truth Social.
The SAVE America Act requires US residents to present a passport or birth certificate when registering to vote in federal elections.
The Republican-sponsored initiative aims to exclude foreign nationals and undocumented immigrants from voting, who are currently allowed to register without documents in many states.
Trump's immediate objective is to get the SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) America Act passed.
He argues that Democrats would abolish the filibuster themselves if they regained power, allowing them to pass legislation he opposes.
He therefore wants Republicans to abolish it first so they can pass the SAVE America Act, the budget and other legislation with a simple majority.
