Inked Fingers Earn Johor Voters Sweet Deals On Election Day
JOHOR BAHRU, July 11 (Bernama) -- For many Johoreans casting their ballots in the 16th Johor state election today, the indelible ink on their index finger has become more than a symbol of civic responsibility, it is also unlocking a range of food and beverage promotions across the state.
The distinctive purple mark, traditionally used to indicate participation in the electoral process, is serving as a "reward pass" for voters, with several popular food and beverage chains offering special deals to those who have cast their ballots.
Among the participating brands, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is offering a 20 per cent discount on selected purchases to customers who present their ink-stained finger. The promotion is valid for today only.
Krispy Kreme is also rewarding voters with an Original Glazed doughnut for RM2 upon showing their inked finger at selected outlets in Johor, while stocks last.
Burger King has joined the election day celebrations by offering a complimentary Soft Serve Cone ice cream with the purchase of any set meal until tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Marrybrown is giving customers one free piece of fried chicken with the purchase of any MB Combo when they present their indelible ink mark.
The promotions have been widely shared on social media since early this morning, with many voters posting photos of their post-ballot "reward stops" after casting their votes.
While modest in value, the offers have added a festive atmosphere to polling day, fostering a sense of appreciation and community among those who took the time to participate in the democratic process.
The use of indelible ink was first introduced by the Election Commission in 2013 during the Kuala Besut by-election as a measure to prevent multiple voting and help safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
Johor is in the national spotlight today as more than 2.6 million eligible voters cast their ballots to elect representatives for the 56 seats in the State Legislative Assembly.
A total of 172 candidates are contesting the election, with Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) fielding 56 candidates each, followed by Perikatan Nasional (33), Parti Bersama Malaysia (15), the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) (four), Parti Orang Asli Malaysia (one), Parti Sosialis Malaysia (one) and six independent candidates.
