Johor Polls: Wildlife Menace, Rural Issues Key Focus For PH Candidate In Rengit

BATU PAHAT, July 7 (Bernama) -- The threat posed by monkeys and wild boars that damage crops is among the key issues that Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Rengit state constituency (DUN), Mohamad Yazid Bakri, intends to tackle if elected in the 16th Johor state election.

He said the issue may appear insignificant to some, but for rural residents who depend on agriculture for their livelihood, it has a direct impact on their source of income.

Mohamad Yazid said since 80 per cent of Rengit residents live in villages, most of the issues raised are closely linked to rural life and the agricultural sector.

“The main problem faced by the village folk, who are mostly farmers and smallholders, is disturbance from monkeys and wild boars that frequently damage their crops.

“The crops they cultivate, including bananas, pineapples, coconut seedlings and oil palm, have been destroyed, especially by groups of monkeys and wild boars,” he told Bernama.

He said wild boars not only cause losses to farmers but also pose safety risks to road users who encounter or collide with the animals, particularly at night or in the early morning.

Apart from this issue, Mohamad Yazid said the problem of river embankments that frequently break during high tides also requires immediate action as it affects the lives of residents in several villages.

“Residents in several villages, particularly Kampung Sungai Berong, have had to deal with high tide waters entering their homes when such incidents occur. The incident in January affected nearly 20 families.

“Another issue faced by rural communities is unstable internet connectivity in certain areas, which affects daily activities, especially among students,” he said.

Mohamad Yazid, who is active in the MADANI Community, said his experience as a member of the Rengit Health Clinic Panel, as well as having served as a village head from 2019 to 2021, has helped him better understand the needs of residents.

The Rengit state constituency will see a three-cornered contest between Mohamad Yazid, Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Syed Mohamad Syed Alwi and Zaidi Japar representing Barisan Nasional (BN).
