Raintown Film Festival Records 47.6 Pct Increase In Entries

IPOH, July 7 (Bernama) -- The 2026 Raintown Short Film Competition received 152 entries, marking a 47.6 per cent increase from the 103 submissions recorded in last year's edition.

The Raintown Film Festival Secretariat and West Coast Expressway (WCE) said in a joint statement that the increase further strengthens the Raintown Film Festival's position as one of the country's key platforms for the independent film industry.

The rise in submissions also reflects the filmmaking community's growing confidence in the Raintown Film Festival, which is increasingly recognised as a platform for showcasing original works, celebrating local storytelling and connecting filmmakers with industry audiences, they added.

"Following an evaluation process by an independent five-member judging panel, 20 outstanding films have been selected as finalists to compete in eight award categories at the festival, which will be held in Taiping this September," they said said.

Meanwhile, Raintown Film Festival founder Jacky Yeap said the festival has grown beyond its identity as a community event in Taiping, with filmmakers from across the country becoming increasingly familiar with Raintown and each edition attracting more submissions of higher quality.

Yeap said this also demonstrates the festival's growing reputation as a prestigious platform for filmmakers to showcase their work and that support from the corporate sector has been a key catalyst for the festival's growth, with WCE backing the event since last year, even before its potential became widely recognised.

"That continued support not only gives confidence to the organisers but also inspires young filmmakers to continue producing creative works," he said.

Meanwhile, WCE Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Alfred Felix said the company remains committed to supporting community development through initiatives that empower local talent and preserve cultural heritage.

He also shared WCE’s belief that every journey has a story worth sharing and is proud to support the Raintown Film Festival, which is gaining recognition as a national-level filmmaking platform.

"We hope local talents will continue telling stories that resonate with Malaysians while preserving the heritage and unique communities along the West Coast Expressway corridor," he said.

The 20 shortlisted works represent the diversity of Malaysia's filmmaking landscape, featuring professional directors, film students, emerging filmmakers and returning participants from previous editions.

The competing entries span narrative films, documentaries, animation and experimental cinema, with each offering its own interpretation of this year's theme, "After the Rain."

The 2026 Raintown Short Film Competition is organised by WuBen Film Magazine and Studio 1914 with strategic support from WCE. The festival is also supported by the Perak state government, Port Ipoh, the Member of Parliament for Taiping and various industry partners.

The festival's third edition is scheduled to take place in September 2026 in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
