Johor Polls: PH Candidate Hopes To Recapture Pekan Nanas With Past Two-Term Record
PONTIAN, July 6 (Bernama) -- Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Pekan Nanas state constituency Yeo Tung Siong is confident that his service record for two terms in the constituency can serve as a basis for him to regain the seat in this Johor state election.
The former Pekan Nanas assemblyman for two terms from 2013 to 2022 said his confidence was also strengthened by the positive response he received throughout the campaign period after meeting almost 60 per cent of voters through various programmes.
"I estimate that almost 60 per cent of voters have been successfully met through walkabout programmes, talks, group meetings, house-to-house visits as well as visits to public markets, flea markets and restaurants. So far, the response received has been very encouraging," he told Bernama.
The former vice-principal and discipline teacher said he left it entirely to the voters' consideration to assess his record of service throughout his time as a representative of the people.
“I rely on my performance as an elected representative. I am not one to be concerned with protocol and am always easy to contact. Anyone who needs help can contact me and I will personally visit them,” he said.
Recalling his term as an elected representative, Yeo said various efforts had been implemented including obtaining an allocation of RM500,000 for the work of straightening the flow of the Pulai River to overcome the long-standing flooding problem, in addition to collaborating with the private sector to implement a project to dig a ditch on the fringe of Kampung Melayu Raya.
Commenting on issues raised by voters throughout the campaign, he said traffic congestion and job opportunities were among the concerns often voiced by residents.
In this regard, he said that if given the mandate again, among his priorities would be to fight for the implementation of two shortcut projects, involving the route connecting Ulu Pulai to Pekan Nanas and the Pulai to Sri Bunian junction which is believed to be able to shorten the travel time between Pontian and Johor Bahru.
Apart from that, Yeo said he wanted to continue organising the career carnival that was once held when he was a representative of the people in collaboration with major companies around Pekan Nanas to open up more job opportunities for the local population.
“I also want to ensure that those in need receive appropriate assistance through government agencies such as the Social Welfare Department (JKM), SOCSO (Social Security Organisation) and related institutions,” he said.
The Pekan Nanas state seat is witnessing a one-on-one competition between Yeo and the incumbent Tan Eng Meng from Barisan Nasional (BN).
