JOHOR BAHRU, July 5 (Bernama) -- The Federal Government has approved the construction of 27 new schools across Johor with a total allocation exceeding RM2.3 billion under the 2023 to 2025 budgets.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) said the projects would provide a total of 830 classrooms, benefiting more than 29,000 students while expanding access to quality education for children in Johor and addressing overcrowding in major urban centres.
“The expansion of preschool education to strengthen access to early childhood education had also been implemented since 2023, with 84 new preschool classes established under both the mainstream and integrated streams,” MOE said in a statement today.
It said that since 2023, a sum of RM444.8 million has also been allocated for the implementation of 5,728 upgrading and maintenance projects at educational institutions under the ministry in Johor until last year, covering upgrading of toilets, canteens, surau, science laboratories, science rooms and other facilities.
"Government-Aided Schools (SBK) and Government-Aided Religious Schools (SABK) in Johor have also benefited from upgrading and maintenance works involving a total allocation of more than RM60.6 million, ensuring greater comfort for students, teachers and the entire school community," the ministry said.
MOE said its continuous efforts through the Johor State Education Department had also yielded positive results, with the state's Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination’s average grade surpassing the national average, as well as outstanding performances in the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) examinations.
It said the government had allocated more than RM88.7 million for the one-off RM150 Early Schooling Aid, benefiting 591,722 Year One to Form Six students in Johor.
"Efforts to address multidimensional poverty are also being implemented through the Supplementary Food Programme (RMT), benefiting 48,015 students in Johor with an allocation of RM35.1 million. Overall, MOE provides 18 types of assistance for children in Johor, particularly those from underprivileged families," it said.
In addition, it said 369 educational institutions in Johor had also benefited from teachers' room upgrading projects involving a total allocation of more than RM11.7 million, while the recently announced MADANI Book Voucher initiative had benefited 241,671 students in Johor through a total allocation of RM24.1 million.
The ministry added that 40 boarding schools in Johor had been equipped with closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to enhance security monitoring on school premises.
