KUALA LANGAT, Oct 18 (Bernama) -- The Selangor state government will continue to focus on building more public housing or affordable homes in the state, in line with the recently tabled Budget 2027.
State Housing and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said cooperation between the state and Federal government is essential to ensure that the objective can be realised.
“Selangor has a relatively high demand and a substantial need for housing, with its population reaching eight million.
“As such, the state government wants to ensure that the affordable housing issue is addressed, including by targeting the construction of 200,000 housing units by 2028,” he told reporters after attending the MADANI Kita (PMK) Tanjong Sepat 2026 programme at Dataran Pantai Batu Laut in Tanjong Sepat here today.
When tabling Budget 2027, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced measures to strengthen housing development, upgrade public infrastructure and improve the people’s well-being.
The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) received an allocation of RM6.355 billion, an increase of 4.38 per cent from the previous year, to continue implementing housing initiatives, community development programmes and improvements to public facilities nationwide.
Key allocations include RM700 million to upgrade public facilities in local authority areas, RM320 million for slope repairs and drainage systems, and RM1 billion for the implementation of Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) and Residensi Rakyat (PRR) initiatives.
Borhan said the state government, in collaboration with the Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association Malaysia (REHDA), would be monitoring housing projects to ensure their smooth implementation.
Asked whether Selangor has plans to introduce a student housing project at the state level, he said the state has similar plans, taking into account the needs of its numerous universities and large student population.
“In addition, we may revive the rent-to-own scheme, and we recently took over 3,004 units at the Lembah Subang People’s Housing Project (PPR). These are among our priorities to ensure that people in Selangor can afford to own their homes,” he said.
Yesterday, Anwar launched the Universiti Malaya (UM) Student Residence Project, an initiative to address accommodation shortages and high rental costs faced by university students in the Klang Valley.
The project is expected to accommodate 30,000 students. To achieve this target, Anwar wants the project completed earlier than the proposed 2030 timeline, and the matter will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting.
